Looping Seoul
_ video loops _2012

3 video loops produced to be exhibited at the long LED screens at SK building in Eulchiro / Seoul. The screens are an exhibition space called Como and part of Art Center Nabi Seoul.

When I first had a look on Seoul from Palgakcheong, a sightseeing platform located on the mountain ridge behind Kyeungbokgung palace, I was really astonished at the expansion of the city visible from there. I was shocked by the percentage of city space that is consumed by apartment complexes, transforming the city into a big boring concrete desert.

When you slowly pan with an 400mm zoom lens from Palgakcheong over the cityscape you feel the gigantic expansion of the city even more, because the pan seems to have no end. The mountains, the buildings and apartments begin to form some kind of visual music as they pass by.

channel 1 -> In the 11 minute video loop on the outside of the SK building the camera endlessly pans through a very narrow slice of the cityscape, making the windows of stacked apartments and buildings form abstract geometric patterns with different pace and loudness.

channel 2 -> in the 23 minute loop on channel 2 of the work the camera pans in 4 rows over the cityscape of Seoul, intermitted by the trees on the bukhan mountain to the left and the right. The pan starts with a silent prelude from the mountain ridge surrounding Seoul, where only occasional power poles and the passing Namsan tower give a hint to the existence of civilization. In the next row, a little bit lower, it becomes louder and noisy as the camera shows the edges of the city, where new town apartment complexes are gushing into the surrounding mountain areas. Then in the last 2 rows the camera dives deeper into Seoul and dissonant patterns of apartments and buildings endlessly pull ahead until the camera starts at the mountain ridge and it becomes quiet again.

channel 3 ->In channel 3 close ups of apartment windows pass by endlessly. Their measured form is giving a steady beat, that is variated by the style of the apartment - old or new, cheap or expensive. We get a voyeuristic view of the apartment's windows, revealing everyday traces of their human inhabitants and these traces are forming a melody over the steady beat.
